SoC With Built-in Wi-Fi and HDR Support Introduced by ST

09 September 2015

Swiss-based chipmaker STMicroelectronics has rolled out a system-on-chip (SoC) with built-in Wi-Fi and support for high definition video targeted at interactive set-top boxes (STBs).

The chip, dubbed the Cannes WiFi, integrates Quantenna’s WiFi 802.11 IP along with ST’s high efficiency video coding (HEVC) in order to bring high-quality HD video to the home via an Internet connection. The company says when the SoC is added to STB, customers can use a smartphone, tablet or television to watch their favorite TV content without the frustrations that previously marred Wi-Fi enabled boxes in the home.

The chip includes a multi-core ARM CPU capable of delivering 6K DMIPS, the Wi-Fi component, high dynamic range (HDR) support, a Mali GPU, Faoudja post processing engine, USB and HDMI support and efficient analog and RF integration, ST says.
