One of the staples of the world’s largest tradeshow, CES 2024, is the new and cool televisions that will be coming out.
These include the latest and greatest of the organic light emitting diode (OLED) TV flagships from the leading vendors — LG, Samsung, Sony, Hisense, TCL and more — but also several cool concepts that test the limits of what can be done in the home or open new ways to install or watch television.
This year at CES will be no different. While 4K televisions have become the industry standard, 8K continues to push the limits of what we are able to see on our screens. 8K content is coming, albeit slowly, and will likely be a focal point for early adopters in 2024 once again.
One big trend that is happening is the inclusion of artificial intelligence (AI) in TVs. This could be in the form of algorithms running as software to dedicated hardware running complex algorithms on the smart television. This is probably the beginning of a larger trend happening in the consumer electronics space.
While this is not a complete list of what’s happening, and some of it is speculation based on prior years, it is an indicator as to what to expect from CES 2024 in the realm of TVs.
Hisense
Chinese consumer electronics OEM Hisense has unveiled the next generation of its ULED X technology with its 110UX television.
Hisense called the television’s quality due to “over 10 years of research and development” providing a high level of brightness and on-screen picture quality.
Features of the 110UX include:
- 40,000 backlight zones
- 110-inch screen
- 24 V high-output mini-LED
- Brightness up to 10,000 nits
- Ultra-low anti-glare films
- 1.28% reflectance rate
- Hisense’s X-chipset with AI contrast and depth
TCL
China’s TCL will also be unveiling its flagship televisions at CES. However, it has not specifically detailed its plans. TCL said it will unveil what it calls one of the world’s largest QD-mini LED TVs to consumers in North America for the first time.
LG Electronics
Korean technology giant LG Electronics will have a crazy amount of content coming to CES including some large televisions.
The company will debut an advanced AI-powered processing QNED and QNED mini LED TV that includes a 98 inch ginormous set.
The flagship TVs have an improved processor with a 1.3-fold increase in AI performance, a 2.3-fold enhancement in graphic performance and processing speed that is 1.6 times faster, LG said.
Additional features include:
- Dynamic tone mapping
- Personalized picture wizard
- AI deep learning
- AI sound with 9.1.2 surround sound in the built-in speakers
- Quantum dot and NanoCell color tech
- Million grey scale
Samsung Electronics
Samsung Electronics is one of the leaders in consumer electronics and not surprisingly will be bringing numerous new TVs to CES 2024 as well.
While not much is yet known about this year’s line up from Samsung until its keynote address on Monday, it is likely the OLED televisions will run the Tizen operating system and have SmartThings — Samsung’s smart home portfolio — compatibility built in.
The speculation is that Samsung will debut a 98 inch QLED TV with other sizes available in 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches. The TVs will likely also feature mini-LED backlighting and a 120 Hz refresh rate.
Prototypes
At CES 2024 there are always prototypes of, well, everything. Televisions are no different.
Prototypes this year will focus mostly on foldable OLED TVs including the N1 from C SEED. This foldable OLED TV has a floor stand that gives the impression of a small table, but it contains a screen that is able to rotate 180° after it unfolds from the base. It then automatically folds back into the base. The 4K microLED TV comes in either 165, 137 or 103 inches.
