ST Licenses Latest ARM Core for Automotive Smart Driving Applications

30 September 2015

Chipmaker STMicroelectronics (ST) has licensed ARM’s new 32-bit ARMv8-R processor technology for deployment in its 32-bit microprocessors for real-time safety-related smart driving and industrial applications.

ST says the first applications for the licensed ARM core will be for advanced multi-core, high performance processors for automotive applications such as powertrain, safety and gateway applications. The automotive microcontrollers with the ARMv8-R core will offer virtualization and separation to improve software reliability, reduce development costs and enable consolidation of multiple applications into a single smart processing platform, ST says.

James McNiven, GM of the CPU Group at ARM, says in a statement that the demands being placed on vehicle’s electronic control units (ECUs) is increasing and ARM’s latest processor core technology has been developed to meet those challenges for power, safety and reliability. He adds that ST’s transition to the new ARM architecture “will be a significant boost in ensuring [ST] is well-positioned for continuing success in this highly competitive market.”
