The K-Touch T619 is the lowest-priced smartphone yet encountered by the IHS teardown team. The phone retails at $33 and is aimed primarily at the Chinese market. The Android T619 supports China Mobile's 3G network based on its proprietary TD-SCDMA technology, and this helps achieve the low price point, as TD-SCDMA does not have significant license fees as compare to WCDMA/HSPA.
Internally, the K619 carries a Spreadtrum chipset solution for both baseband processor and WLAN connectivity. Spreadtrum is a common China-specific component supplier and is known for its leadership in the TD-SCDMA space. The company’s aggressive chipset prices helped with the T619 price point. Chipset brands such as Mediatek don't even compete at that price point and obviously, Qualcomm does not offer anything for that price.
According to Wayne Lam, senior analyst for telecom electronics at IHS Technology, “That's essentially the key for this product; low-cost components, low-end touchscreen display, under-powered application processors, et cetera. Smartphones that can get to $33 are all about an exercise in design compromises.”
