The Galaxy S5 is the latest smartphone entry from the volume leader in the industry. It runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat OS and has a Qualcomm quad-core Krait 400 processor at its heart. Although not a great leap from the predecessor S3 and S4 in terms of upgraded capabilities, the S5 does offer some attractive new features. The phone comes in an IP67-rated water-resistant case and has an “ultra” power-saving mode that turns the display monochrome to stretch standby and talk time.
According to Wayne Lam, Senior Analyst, Telecom Electronics at IHS Technology, the Galaxy S5 is “very likely the first phone to have 802.11ac MIMO [multiple-input, multiple-output] capability, which improves signal strength and overall Wi-Fi performance.” Lam also cites the S5’s heart rate sensor as a feature that is intended to help Samsung position its follow-on products as “life companions” for busy, active adults.
