ST Rolls USB Type C Interface Chip for Consumer Devices and Internet of Things

19 January 2016

European chipmaker STMicroelectronics has introduced a USB Type-C and power delivery IC aimed at connecting all the cables in an office or home for a broad range of consumer, industrial and Internet of Things (IoT) smart devices.

The Type C device offers reversible plug orientation and cable direction, delivering data rates up to 10Gbps and power up to 100 watts making it ideal for computers, smartphones, tablets, TVs, set-top boxes and gaming platforms, as well as other future IoT devices that will be introduced in the future.

The device is manufactured on ST’s 20V process technology and provides plug power support (VCONN) with up to 600mA programmable current capability and per the USB power delivery specification. ST has enabled the migration to the USB Type-C port through the simple addition of a companion chip to existing microcontroller-based designs.
