Intel Corp.’s professional-grade microprocessor line, Xeon, is coming to notebook PCs for the first time this fall.
Long have main processors been used in Intel workstations and servers, so the notebook Xeon line has been designed from the ground up for mobile workstations, Intel says. The Xeon notebook MPUs, dubbed E3-1500M v5 product family, is based on Intel’s Skylake architecture and will support error-correcting code memory features in addition to a higher computing horsepower, the company says.

In May, Intel announced a partnership with eASIC Corp. that would combine application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) with Intel’s Xeon processors to provide new Xeon devices for new segments of the electronics industry (Read: Intel, eASIC Team for Custom Cloud Computing). Intel did not specify if the notebook Xeon family was the result of this partnership. However, it has mentioned there will be further plans for this technology for laptops in the future.
