As AI moves from the cloud to the edge and into the physical world, it will require systems that will allow it to operate locally and reason in these physical devices.
That’s why Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) has acquired Alif Semiconductor in a deal worth $1.35 billion.
Under the deal, ADI will be able to combine its sensing, signal processing, power, connectivity and application software with Alif’s digital platform to accelerate the move to physical AI systems.
Alif is an edge intelligence vendor with a portfolio of AI-native microcontrollers and fusion processors. The company’s architecture allows for sensor fusion, low-latency inference and on-device AI in physical systems.
"AI is moving out of the data center and into the physical world, where latency, power, and trust cannot be compromised,” said Vincent Roche, CEO and chair of ADI. “That is the domain ADI has mastered for decades, at the delicate electro-physical interface where real-world signals become actionable intelligence.”
Roche added that this means the next frontier for AI will be embodied and deterministic.
