Sematech Teams With Exogenesis to Bring ANAB Technology to Semiconductors

07 May 2015

International consortium Sematech is teaming with accelerated particle beam processing technology vendor Exogenesis Corp. to bring accelerated neutral atom beam (ANAB) technologies to the semiconductor market.

As part of the strategic alliance between the two companies, a new company will be formed to market ANAB technology for integrated circuit manufacturing as well as other nanoelectronics fields, which may result in the formation of additional companies, Sematech says.

ANAB technology is used to modify and control surfaces with atomic level control at a depth of a few nanometers. As part of the ANAB platform, chemical modification, material removal and deposition, surface smoothing and control of surface morphology are possible. ANAB is already being used for control of pharmacological and biointegration properties for safe and implantable medical devices in the biomedical market. Sematech says ANAB has also been proven to provide benefits for a wide variety of raw materials such as glass, metals, organic, semiconductor and polymeric materials.

Ron Goldblatt, president and CEO of Sematech, says in a statement that the chip industry is in “the era of atomic scale processing" and ANAB technology opens up “new functionality for semiconductor devices."

Work on the ANAB technology will occur both at Exogenesis facilities and at the NanoTech Complex of SUNY Polytechnic Institute's Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany, N.Y.
