NXP Acquires Smart Card Vendor Athena SCS

10 March 2015

NXP Semiconductors NV has snatched up Athena SCS Ltd. in an effort to expand its secure products for future Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Athena SCS is a UK-based provider of smart card products for access, enterprise, eGovernment, transportation, payment and mobile applications. NXP said the acquisition would strengthen its secure solutions across many areas of IoT as well as Industry 4.0 (a collective term for technologies and concepts of value chain organization), automotive and identification. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Steve Owen, executive vice president of sales and marketing at NXP, said in a statement that security is becoming an "intrinsic part of many new applications" and as such it was important to shore up the company's security offerings.

The purchase of Athena is NXP's second acquisition this month following the the blockbuster deal to buy Freescale for $11.8 billion. NXP also completed the buyout of Quintic's Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) and wearables business in February.
