The IHS Technology teardown team looked inside the Roamio Plus, one of the latest DVRs from TiVo, which features WiFi and MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) connectivity and the ability to stream content to and from the user's mobile devices. With six HD digital cable TV tuners in the box, the DVR function can record up to six different shows simultaneously or the unit can provide six different live program feeds to six TVs. Each of the six tuners can perform DVR or streaming functions, so TV programming can be viewed, recorded, or streamed in any combination among the tuners.
The Roamio Plus's MoCA networking capability uses existing coax cable in the home as a wired network, so there is no separate MoCA connector, just the standard F-type coax connector on the unit's rear panel. There is also an RJ45 Ethernet connector. Although the Roamio Plus has built-in WiFi, a wired network connection is recommend for streaming video to other TVs or for streaming content outside the home if more than one stream is employed.
