D-Wave Quantum Inc. has finalized its definitive agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC) that will give the quantum company up to $100 million in direct funding from the CHIPS and Science Act.
The funding will be used to accelerate D-Wave’s R&D development and scaling of annealing and gate-model quantum systems. Additionally, the investment will support development of next-generation quantum computers such as a 100,000-qubit annealing system designed for improved performance across optimization, materials simulation, blockchain and AI.
D-Wave said it will also develop a 10,000-qubit gate-model system designed to enable 100 logical qubits capable of performing more than 1 million operations for applications like quantum chemistry and quantum AI.
Quantum funding
D-Wave was one of nine quantum companies to receive letters of intent from the DoC for CHIPS Act funding that was announced in May 2026. The total amount invested by the government was $2.013 billion once funding was approved.
The DoC has been actively investing in quantum computing ecosystem since the start of 2026 with a variety of investments in materials, superconducting, photonics, trapped ion, neutral atom and silicon spin. Instead of investing in just a handful of technologies, the government is spreading the wealth among a variety of materials and methods instead of picking a single winner.
The funding will support quantum companies including two quantum foundry companies — IBM and GlobalFoundries — and seven quantum computing companies. The goal is to accelerate the development of utility scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers.
As part of the funding, the government will take a minority, non-controlling equity stake in D-Wave as part of the conditions of the funding. The other companies will also give a minority stake to the U.S. government including:
- Anderon — IBM’s quantum computing chip foundry.
- Atom Computing — A maker of neutral-atom quantum computing.
- Diraq — A developer of scale quantum logic units.
- GlobalFoundries — A pure-play semiconductor foundry.
- Infleqtion — A developer of large-scale neutral-atom-based quantum computers and architectures.
- PsiQuantum — A developer of photonic quantum computing challenges.
- Quantinuum — A developer of fault-tolerant trapped-ion-based quantum computers.
- Rigetti — A developer of superconducting quantum computing technologies and architectures.
“The Administration has made clear that U.S. quantum leadership will require not only breakthrough research, but also the ability to scale, commercialize and manufacture these technologies,” said Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave. “This award will help fulfill that mission by expanding domestic quantum capabilities, strengthening the underlying supply chain and bringing increasingly powerful quantum systems to market.”
