One of the largest smart home makers in the world, IKEA, has signed onto the Matter universal smart home standard rolling out 21 new products running the gamut of lighting, sensors and control.

The Swedish company said with this launch it is rebuilding its smart home system and product range. The launch includes new products as well as updates to existing smart home devices previously offered by IKEA but now are Matter-enabled.

IKEA said the smart devices can connect with a wider range of devices and platforms to make home automation easier to use, more affordable and better adapted to real-life needs in the home.

“Until now, smart home technology hasn’t been easy enough to use for most people — or affordable enough for many to consider,” said David Granath, range manager at IKEA of Sweden. “This launch brings us closer to helping everyone feel ready and confident to get started.”

The updated range of devices includes:

  • Lighting
  • Sensors
  • Control

In terms of lighting, IKEA has launched new smart bulb portfolios in a variety of shapes, sizes and lumen as well as color and white spectrum options.

IKEA also launched sensors for motion, air quality, humidity and water leakage. The company’s remotes are also being used to control devices from a distance as well as a smart plug that turns any product into a smart version.

The is the first of the new product categories that will be expanded by IKEA in the coming months and years as it replaces older devices with easier to use and cheaper items.

The Matter standard was first introduced in early 2022 by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) to unify smart home devices under a universal protocol. The idea was to take all smart home devices — regardless of manufacturer — and allow control via one hub or smartphone app. That means devices from Google, Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Comcast or any other company will work together for the first time.

The IKEA Matter-enabled devices need a smart home hub to work and a Matter Bridge can allow existing IKEA non-Matter smart products to be compatible with the Matter standard.
