Looking to proliferate the market for compact 4K ultra high definition (UHD) projectors, Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a 9 mm x 9 mm DLP display controller, in what the company claims is the smallest device capable of enabling a diagonal display of 100 inches or more.
Called the DLPC8445, when combined with a TI DLP472TP digital micromirror device (DMD) and power management circuit (PMIC) with LED driver, the controller allows designers to replicate the experiences of high-end televisions and gaming monitors but in compact projector form.
TI said that as lifestyle and gaming projectors grow in popularity, consumers want content that is high quality 4K UHD resolution. The tiny controller allows designers to deliver displays that achieve sub-millisecond display latency that matches or exceeds the high-end gaming monitors that reduce lag time for gamers.
Other features of the DLP chip include:
- Advanced image correction
- Compatibility with laser-illuminated battery-powered projectors
- 90% reduction in package size
- Frame rates up to 240 Hz
- Sync frame rates and eliminate image tearing with variable refresh rate
“Where consumers once needed a big TV or monitor for a crisp and clear display, they can now use a lifestyle or gaming projector and transform a wall into the screen size of their choosing with 4K UHD quality,” said Jeff Marsh, vice president and general manager of DLP products at TI. “Our new controller is the latest example of how TI DLP technology is helping engineers develop epic displays for entertainment that can be taken anywhere.”
