Orbit Communication Systems Ltd. is collaborating with Viasat Inc. to develop advanced satellite communication (SATCOM) multi-purpose terminals (MPT) for airborne platforms.
Under the deal, the companies will work to develop platforms that will enhance performance and access for Viasat customers across diverse satellite networks.
Once completed, Orbit will introduce next-generation airborne SATCOM systems that will integrate into Viasat’s global Ka-band networks. These include its high-capacity ViaSat-3 network and its Global Xpress (GX) network. These systems will work with the military Ka-band HCX steerable beams and are defined as WGS ready terminals.
The agreement includes the delivery of 12-inch and 18-inch airborne terminals for military and government use. These terminals will use dual polarization and support the entire 3.5 GHz of Ka-band frequencies for high-speed data transmission and connectivity in harsh environments.
Orbit Communication said the systems will support multiple networks and increase resilient connectivity for users.
What are MPTs?
MPTs are considered “everywhere, all-the-time” devices to support coverage for military airborne systems. Additionally, these terminals allow government users to roam between commercial Ka-band and Mil-Ka services.
These terminals are installed on a range of mission aircraft, rotary wing and uncrewed aerial vehicles. The terminals comply with industry standards — including MIL-STD-188-164C, RTCA DO-160G — as well as U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This allows these terminals to be used on military or government satellites systems for:
- Airborne intelligence
- Reconnaissance
- Surveillance
