QuickLogic Corp. and YorChip are collaborating to develop what the companies claim is the first universal chiplet interconnect express (UCIe)-compatible field programmable gate array (FPGA) chiplet ecosystem.
The collaboration will produce FPGA chiplets for low power consumption and low cost that will be applied to a wide range of applications including internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence/machine learning markets.
QuickLogic said the ecosystem will allow users to create customized systems suitable for interoperability testing and joint promotion. Those wanting to go full system-on-chip will be able to license eFPGA intellectual property from QuickLogic and YorChip’s UCIe IP. This will allow for prototyping and market production.
What is UCIe?
UCIe is a technology that provides more customizable, package-level integration that combines die-to-die interconnect and protocol connections from an interoperable, multi-vendor ecosystem. According to market research firm Yole Group, chiplet adoption will lead to a total available market (TAM) of chiplet-based ICs of about $200 billion this year. This will be used across the consumer, automotive defense, aerospace, industrial and medical markets.
The technology is supported by several chipmakers including AMD, ARM, Intel, Qualcomm, Samsung and TSMC. It also has the support of cloud and software firms Google, Meta and Microsoft.
