SK Hynix has completed performance verification for what it claims is the world’s fastest mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM), called low power double data rate 5 turbo (LPDDR5T), with operating speeds of 9.6 gigabits per second.

SK Hynix provided LPDDR5T samples to MediaTek for testing in February and the tests were carried out with MediaTek’s Dimensity flagship next generation chipset. The chipset is set to launch later this year and will use 9.6 Gbps memory for future mobile handsets.

According to SK Hynix, the global semiconductor industry projects that operating speeds of up to 9.6 Gbps would only be achievable for iterations of mobile memory available after 2026. The verification of the performance of the LPDDR5T mobile DRAM accelerates this timeline, SK said.

JEDEC is in the final stages of standardization approval for the LPDDR5T DRAM and SK Hynix predicted that the generational change of DRAM for mobile devices will begin next year when products are standardized.

“As a result of our close collaboration with SK hynix, MediaTek’s next-generation flagship Dimensity chipset is the world’s first to be validated at LPDDR5T operating speeds up to 9.6Gbps, enabling upcoming devices to unleash an unprecedented level of mobile performance,” said JC Hsu, corporate senior VP and GM of Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek. “Using this updated architecture, developers and users alike will be able to get more out of their devices than ever before.”
