There is a long list of applications for both of two new series of TDK-Lambda brand power supplies from TDK Corporation, including medical and health care, professional audio and broadcasting, industrial equipment and (of course) test and measurement.
Two new series of power supplies are focused, respectively, on quiet operation (MU4, top) and options for cooling (CUS250M). Source: TDK-Lambda Corp. Billed as “quiet by design,” the MU4 series of 1U high power supplies features very low acoustic noise and BF-ready medical isolation, providing 600 W with an input of 85 to 264 V AC (derate below 90 V AC) and 800 W with a 180 to 264 V AC input. An intelligent fan speed control circuit uses a microcontroller algorithm to monitor the temperature of the primary converter and each individual secondary module, enabling the speed of the fan to be accurately adjusted and optimized to provide an audible noise as low as 36 dBA, even with an 80% load. When used in a medical context, the low noise level of the MU4 series can improve patient comfort and reduce operator fatigue.
There are currently nine 150 W to 400 W rated output modules available, providing continuous coverage from 3.3 V to 104 V DC. The product has efficiencies of up to 90% and will operate in ambient temperatures of -20° C to 70° C, derating linearly to 50% load above 50° C. The Earth leakage current is less than 300 µA — including all tolerances, and the touch current is less than 100 µA.
The CUS250M is a 250 W-rated series of power supplies designed in an industry-standard 2 inch x 4 inch footprint that can be silently cooled via convection or conduction. Initially, 12 V and 24 V output voltages are available, with 15 V, 18 V, 28 V, 36 V and 48 V models to come. The output can be adjusted to accommodate nonstandard voltages. The CUS250M operates from an 85 to 264 V AC input and has a low Earth leakage current of less than 150 µA — including all tolerances. Touch current is less than 10 µA (Class I) and less than 70 µA (Class II).
The CUS250M can provide up to 250 W in -20° C to 50° C ambient temperatures when conduction cooled without external air. Operation at up to 80° C is also possible with appropriate derating. Utilizing 1m/s external airflow, or the optional integral fan, enables an output power of up to 125 W at 70° C (this is possible because the power supplies have efficiencies up to 94%, generating less internal heat). Average efficiency, measured at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% loads, is greater than 91%. Offload power consumption is less than 0.5 W when the output is inhibited.
More information about both new series is available on the TDK-Lambda site.
