While the Asia-Pacific market might be leading the way in terms of 5G infrastructure, roll out and development, perhaps even leaving the U.S. lagging behind, mobile operators are pushing forward with their plans.
Sprint has confirmed that it is working with Korean technology giant LG Electronics to deliver what it claims will be the first mobile 5G smartphone in the U.S.
Sprint said the smartphone would be available in the first half of 2019 with the mobile handset built on the country’s first mobile 5G network. Device specifications and exact timing will be announced at a later date.
Sprint recently said it plans to launch its 5G mobile network in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington D.C. with additional markets to be added later.
5G promises faster connection on smartphones with a higher reliability in wireless connection than current 4G/LTE technology. 5G will allow users to download movies in seconds instead of minutes and to play high-speed games without any delay or lag.
Sprint is rolling out 5G-ready Massive MIMO cell sites that deliver up to 10 times the capacity of current LTE systems, increasing data speeds even in high-traffic locations.
Additional devices designed for the Sprint 5G network will be unveiled at a later time, the company said.
