A new medical wearable has launched on Kickstarter equipped with sensors for parents to monitor body temperature, breathing and body movement in children.
Called Mary, the smart e-textile comes in the form of a ladybug that attaches to an item of clothing but is soft enough to not interfere with sleep patterns. Parents use a smartphone app to see if anything abnormal happens when they receive an alarm.
The company that developed the device called Sticklett said Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) still causes 40 percent of deaths in the first year of babies’ lives, a major threat to infants everywhere. Mary contains medical sensors but attaches skintight to clothing, measuring respiratory movements directly from the chest where an algorithm recognizes breathing.
Sticklett said the wearable does not replace a clinical thermometer, but is accurate enough to monitor temperature variation over a long period of time, with measurement units every 15 minutes.
The Kickstarter campaign for Mary has already raised its funding goal but if you are interested in getting a wearable, visit Kickstarter.
