Along the way of diversification and expansion, Xiaomi has emerged as the world’s tenth largest chip buyer in 2014. According to IHS semiconductor spend analysis, Xiaomi will maintain its coveted position this year with spending expected to amount to $6.3 billion. The company will spend 39% more than last year with about 90% of the semiconductor dollar going into the expanding handset business alone. Moving forward, Xiaomi’s chip spending in consumer market will see considerable growth as it continues to broaden its home appliances portfolio with support from third party hardware makers.
IHS forecasts that the five year old Xiaomi will soon cross the $10 billion mark in chip spending by 2016. However, that will only happen if it becomes successful in winning substantial market shares in the highly competitive new verticals and regions.
