The current consumer market is dominated by Apple, Synaptics and Fingerprint Cards AB; all of them use capacitive sensors to scan fingerprints. The capacitive market is in fact getting increasingly competitive with companies such as Cypress and Elan recently announcing entry to this segment. The next technologies to make inroads to the fingerprint sensor market are Thermal from Next biometrics and soon, ultrasonics as promoted by Sonavation and recently Qualcomm.
