Cree Inc. has introduced a family of light emitting diodes (LEDs) rural utility lights (URLs) targeted at upgrading an estimated 10 to 13 million street and area light fixtures in rural areas of North America.
The RUL series is based on Cree’s SC5 technology, which the company says outperforms incumbent high pressure sodium (HPS) and mercury vapor (MV) lighting technology, as well as other competing LED products. The URL LEDs offer 110 lumens-per-watt efficiency with a performance that will provide fast payback and reduced cost of ownership for municipalities and utilities, Cree says.
The rural LEDs can be used to convert street and area light fixtures installed in residential roadways, security, storage and loading areas to more efficient lighting devices that have a long-term maintenance savings of more than 100,000-hour rated lifetime, Cree says.
