SK Hynix Places Memory R&D in Taiwan

15 October 2013

SK Hynix Inc. has established an R&D center to work on flash memory access controllers in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

SK Hynix Flash Solutions Taiwan Ltd. has been set up to improve the development of high-value NAND flash memory products and is expected to become a base of technology support for Chinese and Taiwanese customers, SK Hynix said.

The Taiwan center will work with SK Hynix Memory Solutions Inc., which is the result of SK Hynix's acquisition in June 2012 of Link_A_Media Devices Corp., a developer of NAND memory controllers. SK Hynix did not indicate how much it will spend to set up the regional center or how many engineers it intends to employ there.

The company said there is strong demand for a variety of systems with solid-state storage and which need NAND memory access controllers. This is true in both mobile devices and in servers and the role of memory controllers has become more important to the interface between a central processor unit and NAND flash memory. As a result of the Link_A_Media Devices purchase, SK Hynix has been shipping SSDs equipped with the in-house controllers since the third quarter of this year.

The R&D center has been situated in Taiwan to secure "superior human resources" and better serve major chip clients and manufacturers, according to Gi Hyun Bae, a senior vice president at SK Hynix, who was quoted in a statement.
