In two deals designed to expand its system-on-chip (SoC) electronic design automation (EDA) creation capabilities, Siemens has signed an agreement to acquire Precision Innovations Inc., a San Diego, California, EDA vendor, and Grenoble, France-based Defacto Technologies, a privately held EDA firm.
Both deals are designed to help Siemens’ customers manage growing SoC complexity through automated earlier implementation and integrated verification as well as expand its portfolio for AI-driven chip planning and design exploration.
Precision deal
Precision Innovations develops EDA software built on the open-source OpenROAD framework to help chipmakers evaluate design feasibility, reduce design iterations and accelerate time to market as SoC complexity grows.
Siemens said the acquisition will strengthen its EDA portfolio for AI-driven chip planning and design exploration capabilities working with its existing digital design and verification technologies.
By integrating Precision Innovations’ early design exploration into Siemens' EDA portfolio, the company can accelerate time to silicon and improve power, performance and area, Siemens said.

Defacto deal
Under the deal with Defacto Technologies, the combined company will provide support for advanced design workflows, enabling automation across connectivity, timing constraints and power intent process flows in SoC design.
Siemens said due to SoC architecture becoming highly configurable as it moves from monolithic designs to chiplet-based designs, IP blocks and interconnections are increasing rapidly. This is creating a time-consuming and error-prone process if done manually. Defacto’s software addresses the challenge by automating SoC assembly, design restructuring and power intent management using a unified, persistent design database.
