OmniVision has launched a CMOS image sensor that includes ultra high-dynamic range (HDR) for next-generation high-end smartphones and action cameras.

Called the OV50R, the 50-megapixel image sensor with a 1.2-micron pixel features HDR up to 110 decibels for video and preview with single exposure, low-light performance, fast autofocus and high frame rates.

In addition to smartphones, the image sensor could be used in action cameras, vlog devices and pocket cameras.

Other features of the OV50R include:

  • 4-cell binning for 12.5 MP at 120 fps
  • 4K 60 fps with three-channel HDR
  • 8K video with dual analog gain HDR
  • On-sensor crop zoom
  • Quad phase detection support

OmniVision said the new sensor offers about 20% lower power consumption than the previous generation sensor that enables longer HDR video capture.

“Our OV50R is the industry’s leading image sensor designed for high-end main cameras in a 1/1.3-inch optical format that offers 4K three-channel HDR and a high frame rate at 60 frames per second (fps). Compared with the previous-generation 1.2‑micron (µm) pixel TheiaCel sensor, OV50K, the new mobile TheiaCel sensor OV50R delivers approximately 20% lower power consumption, enabling longer HDR video capture while maintaining system stability,” said Keneki Kure, mobile product marketing director at OmniVision.
