MWC 2024: Oppo unveils prototype aR glasses

28 February 2024

Chinese mobile device vendor Oppo unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2024 its prototype assisted reality (aR) glasses.

Called Air Glass 3, the aR glasses provide additional information to a user’s field of vision that overlays the physical environment. This includes data such as text, images, video and audio.

The glasses use multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) technology to process and interpret more complex user scenarios that unlocks new potential interactions such as voice and visual.

aR is a type of extended reality (XR) that allows people to use a screen or glasses in their field of vision but hands-free. It differs from augmented reality (AR) in that the information is not overlaid in the physical environment.

The Air Glass 3 prototype is designed to explore the possibilities of AI technology between XR devices and smartphones.

The smart glasses:

  • Weigh 50 grams
  • Feature a resin waveguide with a refractive index of 1.70
  • A display brightness uniformity of more than 50%
  • Peak eye brightness of 1,000 nits
  • Touch interaction
  • Four microphones
  • Reverse sound field technology
  • Noise isolation

With an app on a smartphone, users only need to press the temple of the Oppo Air Glass 3 to activate an AI voice assistant and begin performing a range of tasks through the glasses, Oppo said. These tasks include music playback, voice calls, information display, color image browsing and more.

MWC 2024 takes place this week in Barcelona, Spain.
