Light fidelity (Li-Fi) startup Oledcomm has introduced at this week’s CES 2022 what it claims is the first Android tablet with natively integrated Li-Fi.

The technology allows internet via invisible light, without radio frequency waves. The integrated nature of the tablet also means it does not require a dongle to connect to a wireless internet light source.

Li-Fi provides high-speed communication in places where radio frequencies may interfere with equipment — like hospitals or factories — or where Wi-Fi signals are weak. Li-Fi is designed to use light emitting diode (LED) bulbs that are outfitted with a chip that modulates the light for optical data transmissions. Li-Fi data is transmitted by the LED bulbs and to the receivers of smart devices, laptops, smart TVs and any other device that has a data connection.

Additionally, Li-Fi has a latency 100 times faster than Wi-Fi.

Called the LiFiMAXTab, the tablet joins Oledcomm’s portfolio of other Li-Fi devices including access points, photonic antennas and USB dongles.

The signal is a radio frequency-free connection with a signal that cannot be intercepted outside of a room, which might appeal to those in a home office or a school where privacy is key.

Other features include:

  • 150 Mbps downstream
  • 150 Mbps upstream
  • 3 Gbps point-to-point at 1 to 5 meters
