High efficiency front-end module for smart city applications

24 November 2020

Skyworks has unveiled the SKY66121-11, a high efficiency, high performance transmit/receive front-end module (FEM) that provides greater than four times range extension versus a system-on-chip alone. The device features low power consumption and enables fast switch timing, which is ideal for internet of things (IoT) applications including smart metering, connected home, smart city sensors, and industrial, scientific and medical.

The SKY66121-11 FEM includes a power amplifier capable of more than 30 dBm of transmit output power Source: Skyworks SolutionsSource: Skyworks Solutions(VCC = 3.6 V). All functionality can be controlled by a two-wire interface and the device can be placed in a deep “sleep” mode, drawing less than 1 μA of current.

The receive chain consists of a low-loss single-pole, double-throw switch. Three separate collector supply voltage pins enable maximum radio frequency isolation. The SKY66121-11 is packaged in a 16 pin, 4 mm x 4 mm multi-chip module (MCM), which allows for a highly manufacturable low-cost solution.
