Altera now has defense-grade FPGAs for aerospace, defense sectors

22 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Altera has introduced aerospace and defense FPGA variants.
  • The FPGAs are designed to operate under extreme conditions.
  • Altera’s FPGAs are fabricated in the U.S., bringing national security to these industries.

Pure-play field-programmable gate array (FPGA) vendor Altera Corp. has expanded its Agilex FPGA and system-on-chip (SoC) FPGA portfolio to include aerospace and defense variants.

The defense-grade Agilex FPGAs are designed to operate under extreme conditions without compromising mission-critical electronics. Additionally, the semiconductors provide flexibility for these aerospace and defense applications.

The FPGAs operate across temperatures ranging from -55° C to 125° C with lead-ball and ruggedized packaging options to withstand temperature cycling, vibration and shock.

Altera said that because the FPGAs are fabricated in the U.S., it supports a domestic source of chips for the aerospace and defense industries that will ultimately reduce design risk and build long-life platforms.

The defense-grade devices will be available across Altera’s entire Agilex portfolio, including:

  • Cost-effective Agilex 3
  • Mid-range performance Agilex 5
  • High-performance Agilex 7
  • Agilex 9 Direct RF-Series FPGAs

“Tomorrow’s aerospace and defense systems will need to integrate more sensing, processing and AI capabilities within tightly constrained platforms,” said Farhad Shafai, head of business solutions and marketing at Altera, in a statement. “Our focus is on giving customers a programmable foundation they can build on for years, adding capabilities as technology advances and mission priorities change.”
