Facebook plans to launch a new generation of smart glasses for augmented reality (AR) that will cost consumers $299.
Called the Oculus Quest 2, the smart glasses are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform processor and 6 GB of memory. The smart glasses feature newly redesigned controllers for better ergonomics and longer battery life.
Additionally, Facebook has signed a multi-year partnership with Oakley and eyewear vendor EssilorLuxottica to build and release a pair of Ray-Ban branded smart glasses in 2021.
To date, 400,000 creators from more than 190 countries have published Spark AR effects for Facebook and Instagram. More than 600 million people use Spark AR for Facebook and Instagram and there have been more than 1 billion views and uses from the software. Facebook plans to open up portal and messenger features to the Spark AR for more ways for people to connect.
Facebook will begin taking preorders for the Quest 2 beginning next month.
