Looking to improve how smart home devices detect human presence, position and even micro-movements, Aqara has launched a spatial, multi-protocol, multi-sensor device powered by 60 GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) radar.
Called the FP400, the device combines spatial sensing with purported AI-powered environmental understanding. It uses these technologies for multi-person sensing and precise real-time tracking and occupant counting for up to 10 people simultaneously, Aqara said.
FP400 covers a space of about 860 square feet within a 120-degree field of view with users defining up to eight zones for localized automation. This automation can respond whether someone is present but also knows where people are in a space and how they move through it.
Aqara gave an example of ambient lights being turned on and off based on movement from the couch to the dining room table with just one device.
Sensor features
In addition to being a multi-protocol device that offers support for Thread and Zigbee, it is Matter-enabled. The FP400 also has an AI sensing algorithm that reduces false triggers due to factors like:
- Pets
- Airflow
- Devices like robotic vacuums
The device has a built-in ambient sensor that helps trigger home scenes based on dedicated human activity and lighting conditions.
It also works across smart home ecosystems like Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, Home Assistant, Homey and SmartThings.
It can also be installed in a variety of locations like the ceiling, wall or a corner and the AI-assisted mapping detects the room boundaries automatically.
