Lyft to begin using Waymo’s self-driving cars

Ride-hailing vendor Lyft will deploy 10 Waymo vehicles in the Phoenix fleet over the next few months. Once the vehicles are available, users will have the option to select a Waymo self-driving car from the Lyft app for eligible rides.

This is the first step in the partnership and will introduce users to the cars give Waymo feedback from riders. Waymo will use this as a testing ground for a larger rollout in other parts of the U.S. Waymo has been accelerating its program for self-driving vehicles, as well as plans to create a fleet of robo-taxis using its autonomous driving technology.

The company recently set up a self-driving car factory in Detroit to mass produce Level 4 automated vehicles and recently began charging for its ride-hailing service after extensive testing.
