ST Microelectronics has introduced a three-axis micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometer that can change operating mode on the fly for industrial applications.
The IIS2DLPC IC changes from ultra-low power to high resolution, allowing for high-accuracy measurements in a limited energy budget, ST said. The sensor provides continuous contextual awareness to wake the host system when action is required and takes accurate measurements before returning to ultra-low power operation.
The MEMS IC allows designers to build longer-lasting battery-powered industrial sensor nodes or medical devices, tamper-proof smart meters and smart power-saving or motion-activated functions. The sensor could also be used in low power smart accessories for industrial machinery or robotics to create battery-powered add-on modules that require minimal integration effort.
Additional features of the IIS2DLPC include one-shot data conversion, a 32-level FIFO for storing batched data to reduce CPU intervention, an integrated temperature sensor and built-in self-test capabilities.
The MEMS accelerometer is in production now priced from $1.10 for orders of 1,000 pieces.
