STMicroelectronics is integrating its contactless near field communication (NFC) technology with Taiwanese fabless mobile developer MediaTek’s mobile platforms.
The companies say this provides a complete solution for handset developers to design next-generation smartphones with support for integrated NFC mobile services. According to BI Intelligence, mobile payments are expected to see triple digit growth in the next few years with contactless transport ticketing also rising in Asia — specifically China’s largest cities.
The integration of ST’s NFC chipset with MediaTek mobile platforms will help designers overcome challenges such as antenna design and integration, antenna miniaturization and bill-of-material optimization while enabling interoperability with payment terminals in locations such as retailers and transportation hubs, the companies say.
The addition of NFC technology with ST’s technology will allow designers to focus on cost and integration optimization through smaller antennas and reduced bill of materials.
