Remember the buzz surrounding transparent, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays? Yes, it appears it was just buzz as Samsung has made the decision to stop manufacturing the displays moving forward.
The announcement comes in a short blog post from Samsung’s OEM partner, Crystal Display Systems (CDS), that says it received an end-of-life notice for the transparent displays from the Korean electronics giant, meaning it would no longer offer the product to its customers. CDS says the reason is that global demand was not high enough for the transparent displays to justify further investment.
Crystal Display Systems’s recently launched LucidVue display is designed to work in digital signage markets such as retail promotion, hospitality, exhibitions and other entertainment platforms. Source: Crystal Display Systems CDS also put in doubt the plans for LG to begin manufacturing transparent OLEDs beginning next year because of Samsung’s backing out of the market.
Other manufacturers of transparent OLED displays include Planar, Pro Display and eyevis, which also recently introduced a transparent display with InGlass touch technology included.
