Intel Corp. has acquired functional safety chipmaker YOGITECH S.p.A. in an effort to expand the microprocessor giant’s reach into the automotive, industrial and Internet of Things (IoT) markets.
According to Intel, functional safety such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) is used to enhance not only the safety of transportation systems but factory automation as well. ADAS allows for features such as assisted parking and is the catalyst for autonomous vehicles. Intel says as IT systems continue to merge with operational systems in buildings, factories and vehicles, functional safety is an extremely important aspect of IoT. Intel estimates 30% of the IoT market will require functional safety by 2020, including robotics and autonomous machines.
