Western Digital Deals for More Than 100 IBM Patents

27 January 2016

Storage giant Western Digital has acquired more than 100 patent assets from IBM, as well as agreeing to enter into a patent cross-license agreement.

The patents acquired under the agreement include distributed storage, object storage and emerging non-volatile memory. Western Digital says the IP will help the company to strengthen its technology position in the storage market as well as help bolster its recently acquired non-volatile memory assets (Read: Western Digital Grabs SanDisk for $19 Billion). Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquired patents will augment Western Digital’s existing portfolio of more than 10,000 patents and patent applications, the company says.

Western Digital says the acquisition of the patents sets the stage for more rapid advancement and commercialization of new data storage solutions from the company.
