Analog Devices Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire Empower Semiconductor in an all-cash $1.5 billion transaction.
Under the deal, the companies will deliver architecture for AI and other compute-intensive applications through power conversion close to the processors, Analog Devices said. A combined solution would offer a power delivery path shorter than today while also supporting higher performance, higher-density systems.
“AI infrastructure is fundamentally reshaping how power must be delivered, with energy now the most persistent constraint to scaling next-generation systems,” said Vincent Roche, CEO and chairman of ADI. “ADI already delivers some of the highest-performance power management solutions in the industry, and with Empower we are further expanding our portfolio to help customers rearchitect their power systems and achieve the compute densities next-generation AI demands.”
Additionally, the technology combination will not just be used for AI data centers but any domain where energy constrains it, Roche said.
Empower develops silicon capacitors that are already in production and IVR programs are advancing with collaborations of hyperscalers and AI silicon hardware vendors. These capabilities will be enhanced by ADI through its scale, manufacturing and reach, the company said.
The $1.5 billion deal is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory issues.
