SiFive and open-source software vendor Red Hat are collaborating to bring enterprise Linux to RISC-V embedded systems.
Red Hat Linux 10 is now available on the SiFive HiFive Premiere P550 platform, an RISC-V development platform that will allow engineers to create, optimize and release new applications for enterprise servers and cloud computing on the RISC-V architecture.
What does RISC-V bring to enterprises and data centers? The technology is flexible to allow for cost, power and performance improvements, in particular AI data centers. Both Red Hat and SiFive are members of the RISC-V Software Ecosystem (RISE) Project that is focused on optimizing open-source software for deployment in RISC-V-based systems.
Additionally, RISC-V technology is already being used by many companies for intensive AI and machine learning workloads in data centers and servers.
SiFive said it is also collaborating with Red Hat to prepare its portfolio for future integration with RISC-V server hardware from a set of RISC-V suppliers.
“Empowering the software developer community is an important part of realizing our vision to enable our partners to deliver systems with a meaningfully lower total cost of ownership than incumbent platforms,” said Ian Ferguson, VP of vertical markets at SiFive. “Delivering Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 developer preview on the popular SiFive HiFive Premier P550 provides a strong foundation to inspire the next generation of enterprise workloads and AI applications optimized for RISC-V.”
