Spot the robot dog to thwart illegal graffiti sprayers on trains

03 February 2025

Boston Dynamics’ robot dog Spot is being tasked with preventing spray painting on trains in Munich, Germany.

Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s railway system, and the Munich S-Bahn are deploying Spot alongside DB security teams to help combat train vandalism, which is costly and causes delays in rail operations because impacted trains require cleaning before being used again.

According to the company, the quadruped will patrol areas with parked trains during nighttime hours, thereby reducing spray-painting incidents, which is a recurring problem, during a trial expected to run for four weeks.

To enable this, Spot uses a combination of sensors and artificial intelligence that was trained on 1,200 photos so that the robot can identify graffiti sprayers as it autonomously patrols stationary trains at night. Spot will notify DB security if it identifies a suspect as DB security personnel use a live stream to confirm the situation.

During the four-week trial, the German railway system will also assess how Spot can perform other tasks for various railway operations beyond discouraging vandalism, such as inspecting wheelset shafts and identifying issues like loose brake hoses and leaks, for instance.
