Zoox, the autonomous vehicle arm of Amazon, has shown what an experience riding in one of its robotaxis will feel like with a video of some of the first rides taken.
Zoox is developing robotaxis that have no traditional driver cockpit or seating and is absent a steering wheel as well as acceleration and brake pedals. Instead, it has a larger passenger room area that fits four people comfortably and features reclining seats.
The Zoox robotaxis are hailed via a ride-hailing app where the vehicle detects a user’s location, and the user then unlocks the vehicle through a smartphone. The vehicles are carriage seating, so passengers face one another.
Users can also personalize the trip by changing the music, the temperature or adjusting the lighting. It also has wireless charging spots and details of the trip on touchscreen displays, Zoox said.
Earlier this year, Zoox was given authorization to operate its driverless robotaxis on public roads in Nevada after testing the vehicles in California at the beginning of 2023. The company has also been crash testing the autonomous vehicles in order to prep for increased safety as it ramps up toward further commercialization.
