Renesas, Inventec to develop EV automotive gateways

12 September 2023

Automotive semiconductor vendor Renesas Electronics and Inventec are collaborating on designing an automotive-grade gateway for the electric vehicle (EV) market.

The companies will develop a proof of concept (PoC) for connected gateways based on Renesas’ R-car system-on-chip (SoC). The R-car SoC is a computer platform that allows a range of automotive applications like:

  • Automated driving
  • ADAS
  • Connected gateways
  • In-vehicle infotainment
  • Cockpits
  • Dashboards

Both companies will share product development roadmaps, market insights and specifications. The first proof of concept will integrate cybersecurity and over-the-air features for connected gateway applications. This is expected to be available for testing in mid-2024.

Renesas said the automotive-grade gateways will help to drive innovation in-vehicle development in EVs but also create new potential for emerging automotive OEMs to develop their own EVs to bring to market. Additionally, the gateways could be used by Tier 1 automotive OEMs to help accelerate EV design to get vehicles on the market quicker.

“The integration of our technology with Renesas’ field-proven R-Car SoC platform will enable us to reach a new base of EV customers in search of advanced intelligent automotive solutions around the world,” said Sam Yeh, chairman of Inventec.
