Renesas Electronics Corp. has introduced a development board for automotive gateway systems.

Called the R-Car S4 starter kit, the development board uses the R-Car S4 system-on-chip (SoC) for high computing performance and an array of communication features for both cloud communication and safe vehicle control. The kit is aimed at providing a full-scale development environment — including the evaluation board and software — for engineers to develop connected gateways, car servers, connectivity modules and more.

The SoC is one of numerous electronic components on the board, other components include:

  • Ethernet TSN switch
  • CAN FD
  • 4 GB of LPDDR4
  • 128 GB of universal flash storage
  • 64 MB of quad SPI flash
  • Expansion slot of connectors

Additionally, Renesas has developed a software development kit, which can combine with the R-Car S4 starter kit and consists of free of charge software, test programs and resource monitoring tools for over-the-air software updates, intrusion prevention system and intrusion detection system for prototyping and evaluation network security.
