Siemens has joined the Curiosity Lab at Peachtree Corners, Georgia to bring 5G electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to the smart city ecosystem.
Siemens’ charging stations and infrastructure will be installed at Curiosity Lab using T-Mobile’s 5G network to test how 5G enhance EV charging solutions. These chargers will allow Peachtree Corners to have the largest EV charging hub outside of Metro Atlanta.
Both Siemens eMobility R&D hub and the North American headquarters for Siemens Electrical Products are currently located in Peachtree Corners. Siemens is the largest employer in Peachtree Corners and supports the community with six EV chargers deployed.
The Curiosity Lab was opened about three years ago in the city of Peachtree Corners with the hub including a 1.5-mile autonomous vehicle test track inside the tech park. The city was designed to test smart city infrastructure under real-world conditions. Sprint, now T-Mobile, was the first to demonstrate an internet of things (IoT) platform running on its 5G network.
This expansion to use 5G wireless connectivity to power EV charging is a way to evaluate how the technology could be used in an electrified future, Siemens said.
Curiosity Labs said with the electrification of America currently ongoing, expanding charging infrastructure will help support the transition for consumers and automotive OEMs. The smart city hub is designed to test these technologies in a real-world environment to improve EV infrastructure for the future.
