Industry trade association SEMI has formed the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC), a new organization designed to speed up the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the semiconductor value chain.
The organization has announced more than 60 founding members to the group.
The consortium is billed as the first global collaboration of semiconductor ecosystem companies that will be focused on reducing CO2 emissions based on three goals:
- Align on common approaches, technology innovations and communications channels for reduction of greenhouse gases.
- Provide transparency on the consortium’s progress annually.
- Set near and long-term decarbonization targets with the aim to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Some of the founding members include: Google, ADI, ASML, DuPont, Nanya Technology, Micron Technology, Microsoft, Lam Research, Intel, Samsung, TSMC, NXP Semiconductors, GlobalFoundries, ST Microelectronics, SK Hynix, KLA and many more.
These members have affirmed support for the Paris Agreement and related accords to drive the 1.5° C. Additionally, they will align to drive climate progress in the semiconductor value chain.
The next step is the development of a governing council for the SCC that will represent a cross-section of the value chain and will establish the priorities for the member-led work groups.
