Video: Haptic VR gloves powered by maker boards

Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and extended reality (XR) are expected to have a huge year as part of the driving force of the metaverse, merging real world with objects in the virtual space.

At last week’s CES 2022, the industry was introduced to many new devices that will enable the metaverse including contact lenses that allow users to transition from the real world to XR while being invisible to the world. Other innovations included new smart goggles, a driving experience and even metaverse beauty products.

Now, a maker has developed haptic gloves for use with VR games that are powered by either an Arduino, Raspberry Pi or several other single board computers.

The gloves include a cable at the end of each finger, which is pulled from inside a spring-loaded spool. The spool body rotates and engages with the arm of a co-located servo motor. This allows for a programmable stop position. The prototype uses 3D printed and off-the-shelf parts including several potentiometers, servo motors and one of the ESP32 developer boards.

In the video, the maker, Lucas VRTech, showcases how the gloves are used in VR games including the ability to grab coffee pots and turn wheels or open and close windows and doors. The glove allows the user to feel the resistance of these objects while inside the games.
