Metaverse firms have formed the Metaverse Standards Forum, an organization designed to create interoperability standards needed to build an open metaverse.
The Forum will explore where lack of interoperability is holding back metaverse deployment and how standards may be needed to accelerate the technology.
The companies involved in the Metaverse Standards Forum include:
- Meta
- Nvidia
- Qualcomm Technologies
- IKEA
- Autodesk
- Adobe
- Epic Games
The metaverse is any 3D and multisensory content that is on the internet and represents a virtual space where users interact with each other and other 3D digital environments through technology. It is an extension of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) into a merger of the two called extended reality (XR).

The metaverse is the deployment of diverse technologies for spatial computing such as 3D graphics, extended realities, photorealistic content authoring, geospatial systems, end-user content tooling, digital twins, real-time collaboration, physical simulation, online economies, multi-user gaming and greater levels of scale and immersiveness.
The Forum will be directed by the needs and interests of its members and may involve technology domains such as:
- 3D assets and rendering
- Human interface and interaction
- User created content
- Avatars
- Identity management
- Privacy
- Financial transactions
Meetings regarding future standards are expected to start in July of this year.
