General Motors and AT&T are collaborating on bringing 5G cellular connectivity to GM vehicles over the next decade in the U.S.
The 5G core network will offer services such as:
- Improved roadway-centric coverage.
- Faster music and video downloads.
- Faster, more reliable and secure over-the-air software updates.
- Faster navigation, mapping and voice services.
The first 5G-enabled model year will be the 2024 GM vehicles, the companies said.
Current 4G LTE-equipped vehicles and new vehicles will be able to migrate to the new 5G network infrastructure once available. Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles will be upgraded to the 5G network in the next decade to support functions similar to in-flight entertainment platforms.
The rollout of a 5G network is part of a joint strategy by the companies to launch the world’s largest fleet of 5G-enabled vehicles including test driving connected vehicles in GM’s 5G proving grounds in Milford, Michigan.
When launched, GM will provide access to its partners to connect via AT&T’s 5G network to deliver mobility services such as e-commerce, smart cities and vehicle-to-electric grid.
