Wireless network equipment giant Ericsson and MIT are collaborating on two research projects to build new network infrastructure for next generation mobile networks.
Ericsson is working to research cognitive networks, which use artificial intelligence, to enable secure, automized, data-driven network operation.
MIT and Ericsson will collaborate to design new lithionic chips for neuromorphic computing, which will be able to harness the power of artificial intelligence processing while being more energy efficient. These new chips could allow fully cognitive networks to have reduced operation complexity and energy consumption compared to technology today.
Both companies said the research could connect trillions of sensors and other zero-energy devices and powering these devices in a cost-efficient way possibly through a radio signal. The research could show how devices can harvest energy from radio signals and other sources or how systems can be designed to utilize this low power to accomplish simple tasks designed to connect and control these devices.
"As energy-efficient connected devices take the next leap forward, we are thrilled to be collaborating with Ericsson to tackle the key technical challenges," said Anantha P. Chandrakasan, Dean of MIT's School of Engineering. "By combining our knowledge with Ericsson's expertise in mobile technology, we aim to develop hardware that will power exciting new AI applications on the edge and take significant strides in the next generation of mobile networks."
